The Rolex Day-Date, called the President after its bracelet, is the watch Rolex has made only in gold or platinum since 1956 and the first wristwatch to spell out the day of the week. BeepWear lists eight pre-owned Day-Dates, from $23,000 to $64,500 with a median of $53,500: two under $40,000 and six above. Five are yellow gold, one rose gold, one white gold and one platinum, and four carry factory-set diamonds. Each is inspected before listing and photographed as the actual watch.

Which Day-Date references are in stock? Three sizes across three generations. The 36mm classics are an 18238 and an 18248 with diamond dial and bezel, and a current 128348RBR with a factory diamond bezel. The 40mm Day-Date 40, introduced in 2015, is here as a 228235 in Everose gold, a 228238 in yellow gold with diamonds and a 228348RBR with a factory diamond bezel. The two 41mm pieces are Day-Date IIs, the larger case Rolex made from 2008 to 2015: a 218239 in white gold and a 218206 in platinum.

What does a pre-owned President cost? The entry is a $23,000 yellow gold 18238, and its diamond-set sibling the 18248 is $25,000; those are the two watches under $40,000. The white gold Day-Date II is $43,500 and the platinum one $52,500. The Day-Date 40s run from $54,500 for the yellow gold with diamonds through $55,000 for the Everose to $64,500 for the 228348RBR with its factory diamond bezel; the 36mm 128348RBR sits at $59,500. Gold content sets the floor on every one of these, which is why the median is where it is.

Why is it called the President? The three-link semi-circular bracelet Rolex designed for the Day-Date in 1956 is called the President bracelet, and the name moved to the watch. The association with heads of state is real but the model was never officially named for any of them. Rolex calls it the Day-Date; the market calls it the President; the reference numbers on this page are the same either way.

What do RBR and the other suffixes mean? On a Rolex reference, letters after the digits describe the bezel and dial as the factory made them. RBR is a diamond-set bezel from Rolex, so the 128348RBR and 228348RBR here are factory diamonds by definition. That distinction matters more on the Day-Date than on any other model, because so many have been set with stones after purchase. The diamond dial on the 18248 and the diamond bezel on the 228238 are listed as factory as well; where a listing does not say, ask.

36mm, 40mm or 41mm? The 36 is the proportion the watch was born with and the one most vintage-minded buyers want. The Day-Date II of 2008 to 2015 answered demand for a bigger watch with a 41mm case that many found too heavy in gold. The Day-Date 40 replaced it in 2015 with a better-proportioned 40mm case and the calibre 3255, which added the roughly 70-hour reserve. All three sizes are on this page, so the choice is about wrist and taste rather than what happens to be available.

Yellow gold, Everose, white gold or platinum? Yellow gold is the traditional Day-Date and the majority here, five of eight. Everose is Rolex’s rose gold alloy, formulated to hold its colour. White gold reads like steel at a glance, which some buyers want and others consider beside the point. Platinum is the heaviest and the quietest, with an ice-blue dial as the usual tell, and the 218206 here is the one platinum piece. On a pre-owned watch, gold shows wear on the bracelet links and clasp before anywhere else, so those are the places to look.

What should you check before buying a pre-owned Day-Date? Bracelet stretch, because a gold President bracelet is soft and a stretched one is expensive to restore. Whether the day and date both change around midnight without hesitation. Whether any diamonds are factory or aftermarket, in writing. And, on the 18238 and 18248, whether the dial is original, since dials on these have often been changed at service.

How does BeepWear list and ship these? Every Day-Date is pre-owned, inspected before listing, and photographed as the actual item you will receive. Stock is one of a kind, so a sold listing comes down rather than lingering. Orders ship insured within the United States, and the authenticity guarantee, returns policy and warranty terms each have their own page.
